Hydrosols, also known as Flower Waters, are the aromatic waters that remain after steam distilling plant material. They have all the medicinal therapeutic properties of the whole plant, which is a great thing.
With large essential oil companies, hydrosols are the waters that are left over from the distilling process. These particular waters are not going to be the best hydrosols. You must heat the plant water to a much higher temperature for the distillation of essential oils; killing some of the medicinal properties of the plant along the way.
A great analogy about this would be whole wheat versus white flour. One has all the vitamins, minerals, fiber, etc. and is good for you; while the endosperm only (white starch) is great for certain things (croissants). That is not to say in any way that essential oils are bad for you…they are not, but they do not hold all the medicinal properties of the plants like hydrosols do. That being said, hydrosols are weaker scented than essential oils, but they are safer to use for all people no matter age. They are also cheaper due to not having to use so much plant material.
Here are a few uses for hydrosols, but certainly not all:
- Cleansing / Centering thoughts
- Calming, especially for children
- Room freshener
- Linen spray
- After shower body spray
- Facial Toner
- Antiseptic spray for wounds
- Safe for children
- Ice cubes
- Aromatic water for drinking
